Nancy Svehla is a health policy clinical specialist/senior policy analyst at The Hilltop Institute. With expertise in clinical quality management principles and managed care processes, Ms. Svehla works in the areas of clinical quality management, medical management assessment, and the application of evidence-based clinical practices to policy formulation. She managed a nursing home work measurement study conducted by Hilltop for the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. She contributed to studies on payment strategies for decreasing medical errors and options for transitioning enrollees from chronic hospitals to nursing facilities, both for the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. She is currently working with the Department on quality assessment tools for Waiver Programs. Ms. Svehla is the HIPAA compliance coordinator for Hilltop.
Previously, as the director at Maryland Physicians Care, LLC, Ms. Svehla was responsible for medical management administrative and operational functions, including case/disease management, utilization management, prior authorization, and grievance and appeals. Before that, she was a project manager with CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, where she was responsible for training staff on the privacy standards and requirements for HIPAA Privacy implementation. In addition to her project management positions at CareFirst, she gained experience as compliance manager for the managed care Medicaid contract with the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and was a supervisor in the quality/risk management department for Medicaid and Medicare advantage plans.
Ms. Svehla is certified in managed care, health care quality, and quality management. She is a member of the National Association for Healthcare Quality, the Maryland Association for Healthcare Quality, and the Maryland Chapter American College of Healthcare Executives.
Ms. Svehla received a B.S. from the University of Baltimore, where she graduated magna cum laude in health systems management. She is a registered nurse.
