A Note About Our Name

We are The Hilltop Institute. This is our legal name, so please use a capital The every time our full name is referenced, even in the middle of a sentence.

To refer to ourselves, we only use The Hilltop Institute or Hilltop. Therefore, please do not refer to us as “the Institute,” “Hilltop Institute” (without the “The”), “HI,” “THI,” or anything else in writing or verbal communication.

First Reference:

The Hilltop Institute at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC)

or The Hilltop Institute at UMBC

Notes: If the audience is UMBC, there is no need to include the full name. After the first instance, always use UMBC.

Subsequent References:

Hilltop

Note: There is no need to put the shortened form of our name in parentheses, like this: The Hilltop Institute (Hilltop). It should be inherently obvious to the reader that Hilltop refers to The Hilltop Institute.
