Jon Mark Hirshon, MD, PhD, MPH, FACEP, FAAEM, FACPM, is dedicated to improving access to high-quality acute care in the United States and across the globe. He is a Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine and in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he treats patients and teaches as Chief of the Baltimore VA Medical Center Emergency Department and through his role as the Track Leader of the Clinical/Translational Training Track for the Center for Advance Research Training and Innovation. He is Board Certified in both Emergency Medicine and Preventive Medicine and has authored over 150 articles and chapters on various topics related to improving acute care, including the need to place acute care on the global health agenda and articles on improving emergency department operations. Jon Mark has been a federally funded researcher and teacher who has been the principal investigator/program director on multiple federal research and training grants and contracts and has been co-investigator on numerous other funded projects. He was appointed Chair of the Institutional Review Board of the University of Maryland, Baltimore in January 2023 after serving more than 20 years as Vice Chair and Senior Vice Chair. He is currently on the Board of Directors of the Emergency Medicine Foundation and is a former director of the Charles McC. Mathias, Jr. National Study Center for Trauma and EMS. Previously he served as Chair of the Board of Directors of the American College of Emergency Physicians.
